The Dunc Tank

July is here! Happy Canada Day, soon to be the 4th, so a happy Independence Day for our neighbors to the south. The weather has warmed up nicely and water temps are anywhere from 66 to 71. Muskie have turned up the heat, so to speak as well. Have had decent success with the Musk's in bays or just off of rock piles. Warm water seems to be the key here. Walleyes.....they have me working for them. They are still in 7-12 feet shallow humps or points, but I have had some great days on the open water humps (20-27')....however, what was good yesterday, is not necessarily good today....that's why they call it fishing, not catching. :-)
Had some fishing cancelations, so I now have several days open in July from the 8th to the 17th available. They are going quickly, so if you would like a day on the lake whether it be fishing, shore lunch, exploring some historic sites, or just puttin' along, give me a shout. It is tough to beat a day on Lake of the Woods in July! It's the best time of the year for a trip to Sioux Narrows to visit one of Lake of the Wood's nicest beaches, or take a cruise down to Fort St. Charles, Oak Island, Massacre Island to take in some of The Lake's early history.

As I sit at my computer on May 13th, a few flurries fly by the window. Although we have had a fair share of "cracker" days, we have also had some cool damp days, typical May weather, I suppose. I have recently been hired by Stats Canada for the 2011 Census. What a neat job! I have been able to visit well over 200 cabins (camps, cottages) on the lake in the Kenora and Clearwater Bay areas. Of the several hundred census' we've delivered, we have only seen a handful of people. The ice went out around Kenora on May 5th. Apparently there was still a little on the 6th or 7th down by Oliver Island and to the south. Surprisingly, Whitefish Bay (Sioux Narrows) was out before some of the more turbid waters near Kenora. Odd. I will continue to work doing the census this month, and then get right into fishing and tours towards the latter part of May and into June. I look forward to another great busy season at the wheel of my Lund, visiting, exploring, fishing, and relaxing on beautiful Lake of the Woods.

Well, on November 11th, I decided to pull the pin. Went and got my boat trailer out of "summer storage" and hooked it on to my truck and pulled out my Lund Alaskan after being in the water since April 30th. (That's just shy of 8 months). It has been a great boat this summer, and I really couldn't ask for much more out of my Lund. Roomy, great on big water, efficient, solid boat.
I think it's worth mentioning the last fish that was landed in my boat, on the last guide day of the season. November 1st and 2nd, I had the pleasure to guide Gilbert Gauthier and Doug Smith, both of Winnipeg. Day one produced 4 mid sized Pike. Not exactly what we were after. We wanted the big Muskies! Day two started out with much of the same monotonous trolling action...until Gil finally broke our (and his own) Muskie curse. WHAM. Fish on! A nice 40 1/2" scarred up Musk. After a few more hours of a few pike, and a few lost spendy lures, the sun was setting and the day was starting to wind down. We discussed how much longer we would stay out, and it was decided that at 5:45 PM we would head in......or a 50" Muskie....whichever came first. Well, at 5:25 PM Mr. Doug Smith (who had been very quiet for the past two days) piped up and said, "Snag!". Long story short, it was not a snag. It was a 50 1/2" BEAST MUSKIE. Our hard work paid off. At the very end of day two, Doug held that fish up in the bow of my boat. His grimace/smile say it all. What a beauty fish. Please visit "Photo Gallery" to view a picture of the beast. Fish was released, and I believe he was pressured into having a replica made. Well done Doug!!
I can but my boat away happily, knowing that the biggest fish of the season was caught (and released) on the last outing of the season.
Stay tuned for ice updates!

Well, in one afternoon, we shattered the big pike of the season! A fat 39 1/2 incher came along while walleye fishing, and then an hour later, a GIANT 42 1/2 incher was landed! This hawg broke the net. Pics and Video to follow....stay tuned!

Our long beautiful summer days are slowly moving into brisk but equally stunning days of fall. Residents and guests of the lake are closing up and beginning to head home. Fall fishing is one of my favorite things. Not only is the lake quieter, but the scenery and the fall colours make a spectacular appearance, and the fishing picks up, as many species go on a feeding frenzy.
My first summer in business was a success. Thank you to those of you that enjoyed a day or even a two hour tour with me. Every day was a success and the weather sure cooperated. Some of the memorable destinations were: Fort St. Charles (Minnesota), Oak Island, Massacre Island, Sioux Narrows, Sultana Island Gold Mine, countless days of fishing, some windy rock'n rollin' days, and many enjoyable shore lunches. Big fish for the summer of 2010 were: 39" pike, 30" walleye, 17 1/2" smallmouth. Crappies and perch were caught too, but none hit the measuring tape.
There are still some openings in September and October for tours, fishing, shore lunch, or all of the above!!

What a year for Stanley Cup Playoffs. The final was no exception, and both Kenora and Winnipeg were keeping a close eye on the series, as both Mike Richards (Kenora) and Jonathan Toews (Winnipeg) had an epic battle for The Cup. Of course a friendly wager was necessary, which Kenora Mayor, Len Compton instigated. He bet Winnipeg Mayor, Sam Katz over the series. Loser to host winner for a day of fishing. Unfortunately for the Flyers, Kenora, and Mayor Compton, the fishing trip was now scheduled to be on Lake of the Woods, rather than some fishless Manitoba lake.
I was the lucky guide for the day that had the opportunity to host Sam, Len, Mike and Ava for a wonderful morning of fishing. The wind was up, which changed the fishing game plan up a bit, but fish were caught, with Ava bringing in the biggest! Shore lunch was ideal, with clear skies, a nice breeze and a scenic vantage point....and some fresh walleye and wild rice stir fry.
A big Thank You to both Mayor Compton and Mayor Katz for a very enjoyable and memorable day on the lake.
